Looking to buy lens? Here’s why you should hire them instead
With e-commerce sites like Flipkart & Amazon rolling out tempting offers so often, we’re sure that you’re eager to get a good deal on some of the high-end cameras you’ve been eyeing. But are you planning to do the same for your lenses as well? Wanting to own everything we use, is after all, human nature. Those lenses sure would send anyone’s chest puffing. But how viable is it, really?
Firstly, lenses are more expensive than the cameras. Unless you are planning a trip to the wild every weekend for the rest of the year, it’ll be a long time before you recovered the moolah you spent on that one lens. Renting one, on the other hand, would cost a fraction of the cost; you could use the extra cash in planning many more memorable vacations.
·Lenses are hardly a one-time investment. Like cars and bikes, they need to be serviced regularly. Considering all the lively (literally) places it accompanies you to, it’s likely to gather moisture, dust, and fungi over time. When you’re hiring a lens from a photography rental company, this task is invariably taken up by them. That’s one less detail for you to worry about. Not to forget, the opportunity cost of depreciation on the cameras & lenses, which otherwise can be invested in trips.
When you own a lens, well, you’re stuck with it for all kinds of shots. But when you’re renting one, you get to select your lens according to what kind of photos you plan to take. More power to you, don’t you think?
But if you still think it’s economic for you to own a lens rather than rent it, we highly recommend that you take the lens out for a ‘test drive’. In our experience, not all lenses complement a photographer’s unique style. It’s like finding the right partner; once you’ve found it, sky’s the limit. Until then, keep experimenting.
